Description[]

Entity 52, more commonly known as a Spike Bear, is a towering, bear-like creature measuring approximately 3–4 meters (9.8–13.1 ft) in height. It's covered in dense black quills, reminiscent of oversized porcupine spines, which appear capable of resisting steel impacts. Spike Bears have multiple glossy, spider-like eyes arranged across their foreheads, each reflecting light in an unsettling, glassy sheen. The exact number of eyes varies, with most survivor reports counting between six and eight, although some claim to have seen more in dim lighting. Some speculations suggest that Spike Bears are just one entity that can shapeshift its number of eyes and size.

A Spike Bear's presence is often described as deeply unsettling, even before being spotted. Wanderers report a heavy, oppressive sensation, as if they are under intense observation. Spike Bears have the unnatural ability to paralyze, or cause dread, when making eye contact. Despite their terrifying appearance, Spike Bear's behaviors are not inherently aggressive. They demonstrate a rare kind of character, displaying both protective and hostile actions (depending on the circumstances, environment, and possibly the emotional state of the observed person).

Behaviors[]

Spike Bears demonstrate complex and variable behavior. They silently stalk wanderers, observing them without aggression. Witnesses have also described a Spike Bear chasing or even attacking wanderers (though clear provocation was absent). It shows hesitation in deep pitch-black aquatic levels, which can give survivors time to flee. It appears that Spike Bears have thalassophobia, due to their hesitations and avoidance of deep dark waters. When undisturbed, Spike Bears tend to wander levels aimlessly, often standing motionless for long periods. In aquatic environments their behavior changes drastically, displaying calm or even playful acts. Including floating, swimming, or rolling on its back.

In other encounters, they have engaged hostile entities with lethal precision. Spike Bears can be described as guides, silently leading wanderers to safety, sometimes even toward previously established enclaves. But all reports that witnessed Spike Bear's aggression confirm that their roar is terrifying and almost petrifying. Reminiscent of the roar of a grizzly bear, but much deeper and demonic-sounding.

Biology[]

(A close-up of Spike's quills)

A Spike Bear’s body is heavily muscled and armored with sharp quills, providing natural protection and high resilience, showing signs of being harder than steel. They can easily withstand medium-caliber bullets. Despite their mass, they move without making a sound. Appearing suddenly within their target's peripheral vision. Spike Bears have an unnatural ability to phase around when unseen.

Their cluster of eyes also possesses anomalous properties. Deeper eye contact will cause powerful visions, terrifying hallucinations, or intense fear. On rare occasions, Spike Bears grow strong dragon-like wings that emerge from beneath their quills, enabling aerial movement or intimidating their target.

A Spike Bear's roar also possesses a special frequency property. They make the air vibrate and generate a pressure wave capable of disrupting balance and causing a panic response in humans.

Discovery[]

Earliest confirmed sightings are inconsistent and largely anecdotal. However, multiple independent reports place Spike Bears in multi-level transit zones and open water-adjacent areas (similar to beach, river, forest, or pool areas).

The first widely circulated account of a Spike Bear originates from an unnamed wanderer, later identified only by his initials “J.F.” in archived records. After a terrifying experience, he was taken to a small enclave on a coastal level, where his testimony was recorded.

[JF's Log about Spike][]

"I've been wandering aimlessly through this misty and eerie forest. I am lost, it's cold, and I can hear voices, calling or screaming. I was always doing my best to avoid these voices and walked paths where I could barely hear these “wanderers” calling. Eventually, I found a little stream river, so I kneeled down and drank from it. This is when I spotted "it" for the first time. I saw something in my peripheral view, a big and dark figure. When I looked over, it disappeared. It clearly wasn’t one of the “wanderers,” since their call was still distant. Through the mist they appeared humanoid and walked in strange ways. But this thing was massive in size! I felt watched and unpleasant. I felt that something was following me. So I started to run away and shake this creature off.

I didn’t pay any attention to my surroundings, running aimlessly and always feeling like that big creature was phasing around me. Sometimes on my right, sometimes on my left, and sometimes it felt like this thing was right behind me! And suddenly, I ran into it. An enormous bear figure standing in front of me. When I locked eyes with it, I noticed many eyes watching me. Its gaze made me feel petrified and fall in terror. So I couldn’t even count its eyes, and I looked down in fear. I could still see its body.

Its “fur” was just spikes. Like the ones of a hedgehog or porcupine. Even though it was on all four, its height was about 3 - 4m. Even with its size, it could outrun me without making any sounds. Intimidated and terrified, I tried to take a few steps back, but I tripped on a tree root and sprained my ankle. I accidentally shouted out in pain and fell on the ground. I tried to shut my mouth, but it was already too late. One of the skin-stealers that heard me was heading right to me. I could hear the running footsteps on the forest floor, and the humanoid figure now changed its shape.

I knew my fate was sealed. It was either the skin-stealer or this monstrous bear tearing me apart. But suddenly and out of the blue, the skin-stealer's scream was overpowered by the mighty roar of the bear. I felt like the trees and air were vibrating. And my ears were ringing in pain. It lunged at the skin-stealer with such speed I couldn’t comprehend. The skin-stealer tried to swing and fight back, but it was easily overpowered by this muscular and spiky bear. The bear then bit the skin-stealer in its neck and threw it behind one of the thick bushes. It followed up with a following jump, and they both disappeared in the thick undergrowth. The skin stealer's screams stopped, and all that I could hear was ripping flesh and splashing noises.

This is when I realized the voices in the forest stopped calling out. The forest was not extremely quiet. Even the ripping sounds stopped. I thought maybe this was my chance to flee, but when I turned around, this spiky and massive bear was right behind me. I fell on my knees and closed my eyes. I could feel how it was now face-to-face with me. I was so sure it would strike any moment now. I was shaking and sobbing. But after a few seconds, its presence was gone. I opened my eyes, and it disappeared. I looked around and saw it again. But this time with its back to me. It looked over its shoulder, right at me. I felt like it wanted me to follow. The feeling of menace was completely gone and I now felt… safe…

After walking with it for a while, I understood that it’s leading me to resources like water and blueberry bushes. When I needed breaks, it was just sitting there with me. Sometimes on its butt, like a human. On a lakeside it loved to swim and lie on its back. Overall this bear gave me a peaceful and somewhat playful feeling about it. I tried to talk to it, but it seemed to stare motionless in any direction. Never reacting to my thankful and appreciative speeches. It reacted only one time, when I chose a name for it. At first I wanted to call it something like “Mr. Fluffy Bear”, but then it started growling while it was still motionless. Its growling wasn’t intimidating but… annoyed. So I came up with “Spike!”. This is when Spike turned his head to me.

He could understand me but chose to mostly ignore me. But he seemed to have an interest in the name Spike. Eventually Spike brought me to an abandoned campsite. I found and took a survival backpack with some survival tools and cans of almond water. Since I felt safe with Spike, I even lit the campfire. I talked to Spike again and thanked him for guarding me. I will never forget his kindness and mercy. I still couldn’t look directly in his eyes, but I told him everything about me. I told him how much I miss being around people or the beach. When I started to get tired, Spike was standing behind the tent, towering up and looking down at it. It was time to rest, and this shelter seemed perfect. Though it was a strange behavior of Spike. I lay down in the tent and started to grow more drowsy. For a moment, I could have sworn I could hear waves of a beach from the other side of the tent.

After a good rest, I woke up, and a bright shimmering light was shining through the tent's zipline. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I then figured, this tent has two tiplines. When I opened the one that I came from, it led me back to the dark forest. But the zipline to the other side led me to a forest close to the beach! I opened the beachside zipline and crawled out of this tent. I looked around and called for Spike. But nothing… No sight, no presence. Just me and the beach. After walking for a while, I found a small enclave of real people! I don’t know how Spike knew. But he led me to the perfect place, where I can be safe and happy, even though I am still stuck in this endless liminal space.”
