Overview []

Nautics, in order to look more familiar to other wanderers, usually wear scuba diving suits. While few footage of them without suits exists, it has been confirmed they are bipedal creatures with gills and tentacles that can wrap around their legs when out of water. Nautics sustain themselves via trade with other groups, hunting Splinter Jellyfish, and scavenging. About 4,000+ Nautics live in the State Of Nautica.

History []
The origins of Nautics are largely unknown, with their oldest presence traced back to Level 205, marked by ancient footprints nearly a millennium old. Nautics, exhibiting a comparable societal structure and intelligence level to humans, quickly established a significant presence in The Backrooms, excelling in seafaring. They communicate fluently in multiple languages, form colonies, and assist Wanderers.
Their adeptness in traversing water bodies led to a widespread population increase, culminating in the formation of the State of Nautica in 1976. However, during The Flicker, their population drastically declined due to the newfound environmental dangers within Level 205, forcing them to disperse across various levels, facing heightened vulnerability on land. Outside water, Nautics were easy prey to hostile entities, endangering the species.
After The Flicker, they regrouped in Level 7.5, with their population significantly dwindled compared to their zenith, but continue to be moderately prevalent in marine levels post-The Flicker.
▽ Nautics []

Nautics are humanoid beings in The Backrooms. They possess aquatic features like gills, tentacles, glowing eyes, webbed hands and feet, and occasionally anglerfish rods. They exhibit human-like intelligence, utilize tools such as Almond Water, blades, fish hooks, baits and guns, and have established stable underwater communities. Their adaptable bodies can contract to fit small spaces akin to Frontrooms octopuses. They have natural resistance to Hydrolitis Plague, which only heightens their ability to thrive in aquatic levels. While Nautics can survive out of water for extensive time due to their moist skin, they will become significantly weaker and prone to respiratory failure.
These entities are typically benevolent, assisting lost wanderers in ocean levels but strictly defending their territories. Equipped with pressurized waterjet cutters and above-average strength, they can be aggressive and lethal if provoked. When unarmed and without a suit, they may also use their tentacles in direct combat. Communication methods involves pheromones, clicks, hums, and color changes, resembling fish behavior by schooling and migrating. Nautics hunt smaller entities like Splinter Jellyfish and may camouflage themselves, usually to avoid hostile entities, emitting a distinct fish smell when near.
Nautics who are not residents of the State of Nautica or are born outside of established colonies are classified as Rogue Nautics. Typically, these individuals neutrally explore aquatic levels independently, without aligning themselves with the State Of Nautica's hierarchy. Occasionally, Rogue Nautics may band together and engage in schooling activities, however, they do not establish settlements or outposts advanced as those within the State of Nautica. It is common for Rogue Nautics to join other groups, particularly exploration groups, due to their underwater skills being efficient for expeditions. This doesn't mean they can join other types of groups though. Note that Nautics from the State of Nautica who integrate into other groups are not Rogue Nautics.
Hierarchy []
Nautics previously did not use a 'hierarchy' in the traditional sense. During the early phases of the group, there was no defined hierarchy, other than those contributing the most to colonies earning higher ranks. However, after Nautics started observing other groups' hierarchy systems, overtime a more advanced hierarchy was developed. Between the Nautics, this hierarchy is called The Reef.

The main "president" within the State Of Nautica. They are elected through a democratic voting system, where booths across major colonies become available to other Nautics. There, a vote is submitted on who is elected Heart Of The Ocean. They command the trade routes, colonies earnings as well as directing the establishment of any new underwater bases. They may also act as diplomats for other groups. Usually, they can be found across multiple colonies in the State of Nautica, overseeing them and acting almost as a "dominant fish."[3] There have been cases where the Heart of The Ocean is elected based on strength or size rather than democratically.
Anchors are most of the time found leading in the front of clusters of Nautics. They also handle the military as well as take charge of any trading ships. They are assigned by Hearts Of The Ocean.
The main populace of the State of Nautica. Most of them can be found wandering across multiple aquatic levels. They may also act as a workforce, serving many jobs such as seafaring, military, and colonisation.
Relations []
State of Nautica is mostly a neutral group, trying to get benefits from both players should there be a division or conflict.[4]
One of Nautica's primary trading allies, M.E.G., and the State of Nautica have established a mutual agreement. They engage in frequent trade, with M.E.G. supplying Nautica with data, gadgets, and funding, while the State of Nautica provides advanced underwater technology and reconnaissance for underwater terrains. A few Nautics have volunteered to work at M.E.G., however their applications were declined for obvious reasons.[5] Additionally, Nautics have helped numerous M.E.G. units safely reach their various destinations on numerous occasions.
A small trading partner with State of Nautica, the Nautics have mostly good ties with the Backrooms Colonists. While exploring any ocean or aquatic levels, Nautics are often seen guiding the colonists and sometimes, very rarely, leading them into safe places.
While the State of Nautica doesn't trade with N.A.X.O.S. much, they mostly have decent relations with the group for their shared ideals.
Another one of the State Of Nautica's largest trading partners. In response to the Aurielle's conflicts with M.E.G., the State of Nautica has made a mutual agreement with the Republic of Aurielle similar to the one made with the M.E.G.. The main trading source the State Of Nautica gets from the Aurielle is weaponry, while the State Of Nautica provides intel to their maritime forces.[6] Few Nautics can also fluently speak Aurielleno. The Nautics also have good ties wih the Cascadans, due to their shared similarities.
State of Nautica and the Anti Entity Group have generally tense ties, due to the State Of Nautica having entities as a population. Due to this, despite no major conflicts, few minor engagements between these groups have occured, usually ending in a stalemate due to the Nautics living underwater. The A.E.G. is the main reason why the State of Nautica has continued to fund its military despite its lack of enemies.
Due to their opposing nature, the State of Nautica has a negative view of The Marauders for their hostile behavior. Despite the lack of military engagements between the two, the State of Nautica has purposefully avoided contact or interaction with The Marauders.
Colonies and Bases []
While Nautics can be found in almost any sea or aquatic based level, here is a list of their major colonies;

The capital of the State of Nautica, Neptune was founded in 2019[7] after the State of Nautica abandoned Marinia following The Flicker. It hosts about 1,025 Nautics and is a underwater megacolony in Level 7.5. It finished construction in 2022. Finding wooden cargo ships arriving at the dock is very common.
A small aquarium base within The Subwaters. Due to the abundance of Maw Sharks however, relatively few Nautics live here. Hosts about 97 Nautics.
A settlement in Level 173. Used mainly for transportation, although it does host 63 permanent members.
One of the Nautics largest communities, within the Endless Ocean in Blue Horizon. Countless Nautics can be found in the poolrooms, though most of them are in the sea. Hosts 979 Nautics.
A resort community composed of Nautics within Level 330. They are found scattered across the coastline, and small ships can be seen arriving here rarely.
A moderately sized ship in Level 7 hosting a few permanent Nautics. Rarely, cargo ships can also be seen here. The community is seen helping Wanderers exit the level. Hosts about 48 Nautics.
The old capital of the State Of Nautica, within Level 205. It hosted about 4,512 Nautics before The Flicker. Ever since 2017, it has been abandoned almost completely by Nautics, except for a few that may appear once in a while to guide unlucky wanderers who end up in the level.
Documentation []

I was lost in the middle of the ocean.
I had just, by a miracle, outswam a terrifying monster.

I was exhausted and couldn't continue on in my small paddleboat.
Suddenly, I heard a boat horn in the distance.
Seeing signs of humanity, I inmediately yelled and started waving my arms with whatever energy was left in me.
The boat then slowly started approaching me.
The wait felt like years. I stood, watching the crippling waves ever slightly moving my boat.
The ship arrived, and I saw a helping hand.
A.. webbed, helping hand.
I hesitated, looking at the people in the diver suits. The white glow radiating from within their goggles, both calming and unsettling at the same time.
I took their hand, and got up on their boat. I couldn't tell if they were humans or not.
But I did know something.
That they were helping me.
Next, I found myself in a place where i can finally rest.
Humans or not, I will... remember this experience.
