Human emotions are a powerful thing, they can do everything from controlling our daily lives to deciding the outcome of life or death situations. And all too often they result in a bad outcome in some way or another. Have you ever gotten distracted and sworn only one hour passed when it has really been three? Have you ever heard the phrase "Time flies when you're having fun"? This paper will propose a link between the postulated psychosphere/human emotions and the formation of the Backrooms and their continued chaos.
The Backrooms are a creation of our collective negative emotions influence upon reality. They ebb and flow with linked increases and decreases of negative and positive emotions in humanity. So called "Wax" and "Wane" events have been observed, affecting the structure and properties of the Backrooms in different ways. Wax events take the form of increased unpredictability and danger in the Backrooms, more specifically:
- Levels bleeding into one another, with entrances and exits becoming more common and less distinct.
- Decreased probability of meeting other wanderers.
- Decreased probability of locating supplies or items considered useful.
- Increased probability of encountering entities, with entities being more aggressive and hostile.
- Increased probability and severity of paranoia and hallucinations among wanderers.
Effects of Wane events are mostly the reverse of wax events, they include:
- Levels becoming more clear-cut, with entrances and exits becoming less common and more distinct.
- Increased probability of meeting other wanderers.
- Increased probability of locating supplies or items considered useful.
- Decreased probability of encountering entities, with entities being less aggressive and hostile.
- Decreased probability and severity of paranoia and hallucinations among wanderers.
These events have long been documented with no predictable pattern but a correlation was recently discovered between them and changes in the front and Backrooms' population's mental states. Events like tragedies or wars in both dimensions have a direct effect on the stability of reality and other factors discussed above.
This leads to two further theoretical scenarios, each with two variants and each dubbed as a "Mortis event". The first of which would happen when the human race was entirely wiped out on earth. This would result in neither enough positive nor negative emotions to sustain the Backrooms, resulting in them - and everyone in them - ceasing to exist. This could also be achieved by reducing humanity to a population that could no longer mentally sustain the Backrooms. This critical number of people is theorized to be between four billion and one hundred million. The second is that humanity achieves a state of either total despair or complete happiness. The first would decrease the stability of local reality in the Backrooms until the laws of physics broke down to where we would no longer be able to exist. The second would increase the stability of reality beyond normal levels, stopping all but the most simple physical constructs, and by extension; humans, from existing.
For now we can rely on human nature to maintain a level of balance between hope and despair, we're not going anywhere anytime soon.
