Description

The Mail Carrier is an entity that (as the name implies) sends mail to people in the Frontrooms. Unlike the mail carriers in the Frontrooms, the only type of "mail" The Mail Carrier delivers are diaries or journals of wanderers who have unfortunately succumbed to the horrors of the Backrooms.

Casualties caused by The Mail Carrier

Being a class 1 entity, thought The Mail Carrier isn't hostile to wanderers, it can still indirectly have negative effects on those who are unlucky enough to experience them. Some of them being,

  • Paranoia when being stalked for keeping hold of a lost diary.
  • Disappearing within the week after reading The Mail (Lost diaries mailed to you by The Mail Carrier) in the Frontrooms
  • All of the abnormal things that happen when you read The Mail. (This only occurs when you are mailed the lost diaries in the Frontrooms and you are already close the the victim.)

Appearance

Within the Backrooms.

All the descriptions of The Mail Carrier's appearance were different within the Backroooms. But all of the wanderers who have claimed to see it had one detail in common. It's the fact that the entity had a tall slim figure. Being approximately 1.5 times taller than the average human.

In the Frontrooms.

Unlike in the Backrooms, the appearance that The Mail Carrier takes in the Frontrooms are the same. Being tall like in the Backrooms, but more humanoid and have long, slender legs that make up most of it's body. It wears butler clothes with a top hat to top it off, as if it were serving someone or something. It carries a brown leather brief case, holding it gingerly as it walks in strides. It is believed that the brief case contains fourth dimensional properties, making it easier for The Mail Carrier to hold a large quantity of diaries.

Seen in

Because of all the places The Mail Carrier goes to collect lost diaries, it is believed that it can traverse through all of the levels in the Backrooms. (The means of traversing levels are unknown) There is one level that The Mail Carrier NEVER enters, being Level Fun. The Mail Carrier also tends to avoid partygoers, making it impossible for it to retrieve lost diaries in Level Fun and diaries near partygoers. The Mail Carrier can be seen in the Backrooms when retrieving lost diaries. When a wanderer keeps a lost diary in their possession, The Mail Carrier may stalk them for extended periods of time, leading the weak minded wanderers to suffer symptoms of paranoia. When in this situation, you have three options. Wait for The Mail Carrier to lose interest in the lost diary and leave it in the hands of you, placing the lost diary onto the floor and leave the room, allowing The Mail Carrier to retrieve it, or in rare cases, find it stolen while you are asleep.

You can also see The Mail Carrier in the Frontrooms if you are near when The Mail Carrier delivers mail to people. You can sometimes catch glimpse of The Mail Carrier retreating in long smooth strides if you were to open your front door fast enough when receiving mail from it.

The "Mail"

The people who receive the mail from The Mail Carrier always lock themselves in their rooms and proceed to read the mail non stop. They would not do anything except read the mail until they have finished it. One person has kept reading for 5 days straight, leading to severe sleep deprivation and starvation. Any attempt to enter the closed room will result in the person screaming at you, telling you to not come in. If you ignore them and break into the room, you would find that they have disappeared from the room never to be seen again. No one has made contact to those who have disappeared under those circumstances. After they have finished reading the mail, before coming out of the locked room, they will erase the mail by any means necessary. The most common way is to burn the mail until there are nothing but ashes. Since they are in a closed room, the smoke may cause the person chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. When the person have no means of fire. They rip the mail into shreds using tools, teeth, bare hands, etc. Once shredded until the mail is unreadable, the person continues to swallow the remnants of the mail. When the person comes out of the room, they have no memories of all the abnormal things they've done or said. Even when confronted with solid proof, they deny it and say they only remember reading the diary that was mailed to them and had no idea of it's current whereabouts. Most people who have finished reading the mail go missing within the week. This can be avoided. There has been an experiment where scientists have locked a person who successfully read the mail into a room with 24/7 surveillance for the time span of a week. As a result, the person didn't disappear and kept on living their normal lives after that. In conclusion, as long as you keep an eye on the person who read the mail for a week, they should not go missing.

Motives/Objectives

Though the objective of The Mail Carrier is not clear, there are many theories as the why The Mail Carrier goes out of it's way to collect and return the lost diaries.

Here are some of the most popular theories.

・The Mail Carrier was once a wanderer themselves, hence the unknown author hard case journal without a title (Also known as log 5) found by Ace in "Placeholder". As a result of their deaths, it wanted more information of the Backrooms known to people in the Frontrooms, so there are fewer wanderers that end up like it. This theory also backs up the discussion of there only being one Mail Carrier.

・The Mail Carrier feels sympathy for those who had to endure the despair the Backroom caused, only ending in an uneventful death that no one will ever know about, urging The Mail Carrier to at least give those who have written their story to those they care about.

・The Mail Carrier is an entity that works for someone or something else, hence the butler clothes. (Objective Unknown)

There are also theories that The Mail Carrier has malicious intent in it's actions, the most popular one being "The Cycle Theory"

The Cycle Theory

This is a theory that theorizes The Mail Carrier understands the bond between those who already know to the victim is much stronger than those who read random tales on the internet. By mailing the diary to the unfortunate wanderer's close ones, it urges them to enter the Backrooms for some unknown reason. This reasoning is backed up by plenty of M.I.A's reported to those who recently got mail by The Mail Carrier. Nobody knows if The Mail Carrier has tempered with the diaries, but it is most likely hence the abnormal things that happen when reading one.

Possible Masters?

Since The Mail Carrier wears butler clothes, there have been many guesses as to who it serves, the top 5 being,

(Not implemented yet.)

Because of The Mail Carrier's actions, it's master will most likely be somewhat interested in either the wanderers or their tales. It may also be best to think that the master of The Mail Carrier is non hostile towards wanderers. (Unless you believe the Cycle Theory.) If you think about it, The Mail Carrier has the ability to travel through all but one level, so it could be a easy task to dominate all of the Backrooms. At the same time, The Mail Carrier's master may not have full control over it, hence the sticky notes that The Mail Carrier sometimes gives to people in the Frontrooms.
