Description

The Maintenance Level is a series of tunnels covered on all sides by various forms of machinery. The most common form of machinery is pipes, but some parts of the level are filled with wires, gears, circuitry, and forms of technology that seem to originate from after the 20th century. Some tunnels are even filled with what appear to be pipes and wires made from biological material. The level usually has a floor made of metal. There are no walls, only a massive menagerie of machinery that encloses the tunnel. Peering between the cracks of the machinery (usually pipes) will simply reveal more machinery that seems to stretch on forever. The level is a maze of tunnels that intersect each-other. The structure of the level is extremely non-euclidean and will often change; however, a small number of paths have been found that have remained relatively stable for years without any major changes. These paths (mainly starting on level 2 are often used by experienced groups to enter this level.

The machinery on this level often displays anomalous properties making it extremely valuable. It has been theorized that this level contains much of the machinery that the Backrooms run n. The pipes have been known to contain many strange substances including almond water, liquid pain, and liquid void. Many people enter this level as a way to gain complex technology and rare materials; however, this can be a very risky. The Maintenance Level acts as a living Being in the way that it is able to defend itself. If a wanderer inflicts enough damage on the level, then the level will oftentimes manifest machines to pull the wanderer off the path and into its endless machinery. The most common way this occurs is that pipes will move out of the side of the level and will physically merge themselves with the wanderer. The pipes, despite usually being made out of (apparently) rigid metal, will twist and turn like a serpent. When the end of a pipe touches a person's body, it physically merges to it body, destroying any clothing in the way. If a pipe merges into a wanderer's limb, then the only way to free them is to amputate it. If the pipe merges into their torso, then it is impossible to remove it without killing them. Once the level grabs hold of a person, it will often cease attacking them and slowly disassemble their body over time. While many groups euthanize people being consumed by the level, others have a strict policy against euthanasia, as it often provokes the level into further attacks.

Entities

The only known entities in The Maintenance Level are creatures called Amalgamations. Amalgamations are vaguely humanoid creatures made of a fusion of flesh and machinery. These entities often have body parts belonging to other entities such as Insanities, Hounds, Skin-Stealers, and even humans. The Maintenance Level is believed to use these entities as an additional means of protection along with it’s pipes; however, some Amalgamations seem to spawn randomly, and killing them does not significantly heighten the hostility of the level. Occasionally, humans who are absorbed by the level will later reappear having been changed into Amalgamations.

Entrances

Digging through the walls of most levels in the backrooms will eventually lead to The Maintenance Level.

Doors to this level can be found in level 2.
