I opened my dark brown eyes to the all-too-familiar mono-yellow hallway that laid before me. Half-dead, decades-old fluorescent lights shone above with a luminosity that was underwhelming in nature. I silently cursed in realization as my mind flashes back to each time I had the misfortune of coming here. Though I could not tell if this was my 5th, 18th or 100th time visiting this damned plane of existence, it did not matter; the only thing my mind was concentrated on was finding a way to escape to some place safe from the reaches of the abstract horrors that lied somewhere, expectant of unfortunate wanderers such as I to walk without caution and get themselves killed.

I shook my head to rid myself of such negative thoughts; though the environment surrounding me was anything but a bringer of jubilance, it did not mean that I’d be forced to wallow in despair for the duration of my time there. I steeled myself and began my journey through the rooms. With each corner, I focused on all senses: sight, smell and hearing above all.

I saw shadows that seemed to almost warp as if moving with each step forward that I took, silently creeping.. a musty odor abundant with pungent mold making itself known, and I could hear screams that felt both far too human for comfort and of an eldritch, monstrous origin. I started to walk a little faster. An attempt to not make sound was made, though it was hard to tell if I was successful in this endeavor or not; the lack of entities nearby would point signs towards the former, but there was always this seed of doubt that laid deep within my consciousness.

It was at that moment, at my most mentally vulnerable, that I heard it: the roar of an engine belonging to a car that had long since then passed its moment of expiration. My eyebrows furrow in confusion: in both the illogicality and improbability of a car being in this monotonous hell of all places, and of how a car could even fit in corridors like these. No longer would I have to ponder about the source of this unusual sound, however, as with the next room I passed, I stared down a corridor that had to be at least half a mile long: lengthy, but just close enough for my trained eyes to spot what exactly it was that faced me at the other end of the hallway.

A rundown car with a paint-job as dull as the walls surrounding the vehicle, its gray doors reflecting the light from the bulbs overhead, blinkers that are brighter than they should be considering the condition of the car, and a menacing rumbling emanating from the engine of the car as it stares directly at me, almost as if it were sentient. I stand there for a moment or two, dumbfounded by what I see, and then quickly collect myself; I have seen far, far worse than a car that looks like it hasn’t seen the light of day since’s the 2000s. Though, the question of “why is it there?” still persisted in my conscience. I would have not a moment more to think, however, because the automobile suddenly sprung into action, its wheels moving unnaturally fast for a car of such decrepitude. It took another half a second before my body caught up with my mind and I turned around, running as fast as I could manage with my legs. I did not stop for anything: any and all were ignored and forgotten as I hit the ground with force so strong it shook the ground as I soared through each room, attracting the attention of multiple entities that wouldn’t have noticed that I was there if I were not running. I took a deep breath in both annoyance and nervousness as I realized that the danger of the situation I had now found myself in had worsened to a severe degree.

Worst of all, the rumbling of the engine from the car had grown louder in volume as it followed me through the labyrinth of yellow spaces. It was at this precise moment in time that I had allowed myself to turn around once. Amongst the onslaught of entities that had now gathered and joined in this morbid game of cat and mouse— a glowing white smile with fangs sharper than that of a vampire belonging to an incorporeal body, a creature that took the body shape of a dog but had been altered to have the physical characteristics of something ripped straight from the depths of Hell, and more that I did not have the time to recognize and examine, nor did I want to for the sake of my mental stability— the mobile pile of metal had followed suit, and I came to the horrific realization that it could alter its size. No matter where I went, it was capable of following me with ease, and with speeds I could never hope of matching. No sooner did I come to this realization, than did my body turn around and find itself unable to stop as I crashed into a wall that had been in front of me; however inconvenient it was, it did not matter to me anymore. I fell to the ground, and I tried desperately to get back up; a few bruises had made themselves known on my tanned skin, but superficial injuries were of the least of my concerns as the entities came ever closer to me. Thinking quickly, I waited until the entities had come at just about a few seconds away in terms of reaching my position, and then immediately dashing towards the corridor to my right; my plan worked as expected, as all of them had crashed into the wall, with the car coming in last and finishing them off as an added bonus. I silently cheered in mirth, but I knew that now was not the time to congratulate myself. I made as much distance from me and the car as I could before it eventually started itself up again, and I saw that it had taken quite the beaten from the crash. Its lighters were no longer functional (how they ever were before that point, only a deity could possibly know), and it had a massive indentation at hood. Blood from the entities it had accidentally killed was smeared onto it, as if in an attempt to paint over the car in it.

Snickering mentally, I ran even faster than I did before, tiring me slightly but still manageable despite the throbbing pain from the injuries sustained in the crash. The water vapor I expel from my lungs so potent the air seemed damp, my heart pumping as I look for a way out of my predicament. The car, almost as if sentient in the way it proceeds, pushes its pedal as if angered; the idea of a car being self-aware in any capacity, let alone enough to be able to experience human emotions, terrified me more than I would like to admit. Twisting and turning with every opportunity I had, I tried to change direction quickly enough to confuse the car, but it was to no avail: it was moving far too swiftly for such a thing to happen. Though moving at a relatively low speed for a car, it was still faster than I could manage at the moment, and so the only thing that I could do was pray on whatever higher being was in charge of this place that I would make it out of here fine as I had all of those times before. My opponent, though the most human construct I had seen so far, had been my most unpredictable foe yet, paradoxically enough.

The beige-yellow carpet turned a nasty reddish-black as the blood on the car mixed with the pigment of the carpeting, adding onto the already desolate atmosphere that the place had exuded before. The distance between me and the car, though it was substantial initially, had been decreasing over time. Just as I had started to panic, making me run faster than I had ever been able to before due to the rush of adrenaline coursing through my body, a myriad of pathways made itself known in front of me. 7 different hallways leading into the unknown up ahead, and all I had to do was choose one that the car would not be able to follow me through. Seeing this opportunity, I took a path through the middle-most hallway and turned the corner, allowing myself a breath or two as the car seemed to be more distant than previously. Just as I was finally about to weep in joy, halfway through the corridor, the car had started driving down the path and directly towards me. Knowing death was near, I could do nothing but run faster and faster until my body wasn’t able to take the immense strain on my legs and stamina overall. An exercise in futility, I thought bitterly, as I realized that there was nothing left I could do; a dead end up ahead. Just as I was about to give up, reality started to warp and shift around me, the sounds of the roaring engine of the car being distorted in a million different ways as the air seemed to crackle and break. The monotonous yellow walls turn into grey and black, the fluorescent bulbs becoming regular LED light bulbs, and without a buzz. The musty odor dissipated slowly but surely as I seemingly entered another realm of existence. Without question, I run even faster, coming closer and closer to the dead end, until a blinding radiance pops into existence and consumes my vision.

Waking up, I find myself in a different place altogether. It was at last that I had figured out what happened to me; I had no-clipped into Level 1 out of sheer desperation. I gape at nothing in particular before whooping in pure, unadulterated joy. I stop myself before I could do anything else though, because I knew that there was other entities in the level that could hear me if I was too loud. Still both exhausted and relatively calm, I adopt a tiny smirk for the first time what feels like an eternity as I make my way through the area. Enjoying the lack of murderous, self-aware cares, I take in the remarkably different but altogether familiar sights, I prepare myself for my next endeavor: finding another wanderer. Solitude was never my thing, anyways.
