Do you hear that?

But this is your first time, right?

It happens to some of us. It follows us everywhere.

As if waiting for one of us to open it.

But don't. Don't answer it. Not even getting close...

But it won't stop. That and the nagging feeling to go to that damn door.

I tried sleeping it off, but it only made things worse. Like that door coming in closer, growing louder from knocking to banging... Didn't have a good sleep for weeks.

I'm not sure why, but some poor souls eventually gave in and went for it and... never came back.

And the door... It feels very wrong... It's like going back home - to the Frontrooms. But I don't want to. I'm terrified of it.

But I'm at my limit and can't take any more of this.

So just...

Don't answer... No matter what.

Description[]

Palace 1

The level's interior layout.

The Palace[1] is a strange level that is exclusively found within the Void. Its main consistent features include grand and baroque architecture, characterized by massive size and elaborate designs similar to grand Baroque architectural designs. The Palace was not merely for display as upon further investigation reveals that this level contains remarkable pieces of advanced alien technology and its rich history. It is also associated with the Travelers as they shown able to interact it with technical level of knowledge and their ease of navigating its layouts without getting lost.

As previously mentioned, the areas of the Palace are vast, connected by a seemingly infinite and random series of sub-levels separated by monolithic gates so much so that its layouts were unpredictable and labyrinthine which it can easily to cause wanderers to become lost thus navigation and finding an exit is a must. Each sub-level possesses different properties and functions.

The structural integrity of the Palace is anomalously durable despite its material primarily composed of marble and gold. If a sub-level that are functional and in pristine condition, any area that are compromised triggers a phenomenon that instantaneously repairs the damage.

Its ambient temperature is around 22°C (71.6°F), though some areas or its sub-level can be colder. It is advisable to wear insulated outfits and use temperature-regulating equipment.

Importantly, this level contains abundant amount of objects, including the rare and the coveted Golden Artifacts. This will attract many wanderers and prominent groups such as the MEG, Backroom Colonists, KRO, and more. However, be warn the Marauders are also present and they are more active and hostile in this level.

Moreover, it has entities defending it known as the Keepers, acting as the level's security measures and prevent any intruders to get their hands on the objects and especially the Golden Artifacts.

Dereliction[]

Derelict 1

One of the many sub-levels that have degraded into derelicts.

They are simply known as the Derelicts. These Derelicts are the sub-levels that are either remain inactive and empty or left into ruins with various levels of deterioration.

Moreover, these said Derelicts will further itself to deteriorate as it collapse due to its instability, so much so that it can cause more damage (such as tremors, falling debris, Marauder's incursions and etc.), which can be hazardous to any wanderer while being difficult to navigate. It is unknown when these Derelicts could finally collapse itself, despite this, they are still remain stable due of the Palace's anomalous durability. Until then, all wanderers should assume the Derelicts' condition whether they are safe or not.

Security[]

There are entities that are only residing within this level, specifically active ones, they are designated as the "Keepers," these entities act as the level's defensive system and they will attack anyone until they are neutralized.

They are two of them and which they are link to each other; Minor and Major. They will only manifested when the level's phenomenon occurs.

Objects[]

Various objects are stored and littered throughout the level which none of these can be found anywhere in the Backrooms, making it a prime level of retrieving new objects.

The aforementioned Golden Artifacts are incredibly rare and are well hidden within certain parts of the non-Derelict sub-levels. If they are ever discovered, they often lead to a spacious, empty chamber containing an intricate storage container. In some cases, the artifact may be hidden beneath the floor and can typically be found in the center of the chamber, where it rests inside a single storage container. However, it is nearly impossible to open, as it requires some mechanism to unlock it. If, by chance, it ever does open, it will automatically unfurl to reveal the artifact within.

If an artifact is located within non-Derelict sub-levels, extracting it could trigger security systems, prompting the Keepers do everything they can to stop and neutralizing the intruder.

Sub-Levels[]

Either sub-levels or areas, its massive, random and seemingly infinite non-Euclidean layouts of this level are difficult to navigate the layouts, especially upon entering or exiting through sub-levels.

There are currently four sub-levels and are still research to this regarding, only regarding to the non-Derelict ones as the Derelicts do not have any of its properties.

Here are the list:

Palace A

Sub-Level A. Along with its point of interest.

Sub-Level A is seemingly endless and labyrinthine corridor extends with an undetermined layout, featuring sparse furniture here and there. Fortunately, there are several gateways and flight of stairs that can be used to access various random sub-levels. There are no particular functions other than that of an infinite corridor.

Points of Interests[]

In this sub-level, some areas contain watercourses. Following these watercourses, one may encounter "reverse waterfalls," which typically lead to flights of stairs, while others lead to high-reaching areas.

Palace B

Sub-Level B. Its ceiling is covered by intricate crystalline material.

Sub-Level B is a spacious area supported by tall pillars that reach up to a seemingly high ceiling, beyond what the eye can see. There are several floor levels connected by bridges, linking floors to another. A few monolithic golden gates can be found within these sub-levels.

Points of Interests[]

Several floating structures adorned with hanging, flowing fabric and golden objects can be seen at the highest points of these sub-levels. It is possible to reach these structures, but the means to lower them or the methods to access them remain unknown, as there appear to be no mechanisms available.

Tall shrines can be discovered; however, they are sealed off by several gates. Further study is needed to determine how to enter these shrines.

It is possible that these aforementioned points of interest are exits from this level; otherwise, they may lead to undiscovered sub-levels.

Palace C

Sub-Level C, in daylight. Photo is taken along with a structure in the distance.

Vast and seemingly infinite scene of beautiful grass field, it stretches as far as the horizon. Interestingly, some plants within these sub-levels has a mechanical-like characteristics, made of intricate materials such as gold or marble, each of these plant matter exhibiting anomalous properties, all of which have been proven to be beneficial. Each of these sub-levels is either perpetually in daylight or twilight, but bright enough to navigate throughout the entire area.

Keepers (specifically Keeper Minors) remain passive and only tend to the plant life within these sub-levels.

There are circular staircase platforms or there are bio-mechanical tree-like plant life neatly arranged into circular formation where a single archway standing on golden circular floors, they can be used to enter or exit these sub-levels.

Points of Interests[]

In each of these sub-levels, there are tall towers that reaches high into the sky. It is impossible to reach this structure without any form of transportation.

These sub-levels may have a chance of encountering Old Age Haven Trees.

Palace D

Sub-Level D. This instance of this sub-level is supported by pillars.

Sub-Level D features numerous platforms and structures that are either hanging by fine threads, supported by black pillars, or simply floating in mid-air. Beneath these platforms lies a bottomless vast pit, which is presumably the Void.[2] These platforms enable individuals to traverse to other areas via smaller platforms, facilitating movement to the next designated structures.

Points of Interests[]

A large, black marbled diamond-shaped structure appears only once in each of these sub-levels. The function of this structure remains undetermined, but there are seams that are presumed to be access points; however, they remain shut. Strangely, the structure generates frequencies whenever telecommunication devices are nearby and emits a gentle hum throughout these sub-levels.

For now, experienced navigators and researchers are currently study and exploring within this level.

The Cycle[]

The Blackout Cycle, or simply the Cycle, is a phenomenon exclusive to this level, specifically to its non-Derelict sub-levels. It begins with a loud, reverberating thump that echoes all throughout the entire sub-level, followed by the sequential deactivation of lights, leaving the area into immediate darkness[3]. Afterward, it leaves these ghostly copies of intruders which briefly appear then slowly fade away once the lights are turned off, the reason for the manifestation of these copies remains undetermined.

This phenomenon occurs at random intervals and duration, with subsequent activations repeating unpredictably over time.

While the nature of this level's behavior and phenomena remains unclear, some suggest that it may be a response to threats, likely determining the type of threats it presents. This would trigger the security measures by manifesting inert Keepers, which these lead them into active phase until eventually one of them upgraded into advanced iterations to eliminate dangerous intruders.

Throughout this repeating process, the Cycle maintains the structural integrity of sub-levels. It repairs damage within these areas, although the responses to repairs are delayed and are initiated in the presence of detected hostiles.

Entities[]

Several entities, such as Wretches, Hounds, Smilers, and more, they may inhabit some of the Derelicts from then and there but they are rare to encounter given the level's labyrinthine layout. Should these entities are in one of the non-Derelict sub-levels, they are promptly eliminated by its security systems.

The Travelers can be seen wandering and looking with the same interests of retrieving objects and the Golden Artifacts. This also include Marauders and these two opposing groups will often encounter and engage in combat.

However, some wanderers have reported encountering unidentified entities roaming within this level. These entities appear to be pillaging or some have said that they have established their own small outposts (see Entity Encounter Report 001-1-3 for more details).

Keepers[]

There are entities responsible for keeping the level secured from intruders. These mechanical entities are aggressive and will do anything to defend their territory. There are two specific conditions that make the Keepers active:

  • They only manifest through the level's phenomenon, beginning as simple, small geometric objects. Later, they emerge as Keeper Minors. Should threats persist, some of these Keeper Minors will "upgrade" into Keeper Majors.
  • They only remain within the level's functional sub-levels

Currently, there are only two confirmed Keeper entities, although other wanderers have claimed to encounter unconfirmed entities that seem to be associated with the level:

Keeper Minor[]

Sometimes referred to as the Void Cells, Keeper Minors are geometrically-shaped entities that are mechanical in nature, following the behaviors dictated by the level's security systems. Their distinct marble material serves as protective shells, which can regenerate quickly after sustaining damage.[4]

When these entities attack, their shells open to expose their core, which is entirely composed of a gem, discharging energy projectiles. They have the ability to float and can fly through the air, moving in cardinal directions and adjusting their altitude when necessary. The entities move in short bursts of speed then briefly stopped before displacing. They often travel in groups but combining of their quick and erratic movements which they are difficult to eliminate.

There are several variants of these which can be distinguished by their specific shapes and colors, with each of them having their own unique properties or functions.

Keeper Major[]

Also known as Constructs, these entities are advanced iterations of their previous form and can be "upgraded" through the level's phenomenon, although only some of them will advance to this higher state.

Their appearance is significantly more drastic, resembling vaguely humanoid shapes with multiple floating appendages, such as arms and hands, which they use to attack. A distinctive arch-shaped object houses their core, while geometric shapes at the top serve as their heads.

Like their lesser counterparts, Constructs can fly, but their movements are no longer erratic and are significantly slower. However, they are more durable and possess enhanced firepower, as their multiple appendages can fire in different directions or concentrate their attacks on a single target.

Similar to Keeper Minors, Constructs have various variants that are distinguished by their aforementioned heads, with each variant having its own unique properties or functions, albeit at a more advanced level.

Entrances and Exits[]

Though located within the Void, wanderers who no-clip into this level typically appear near the main entrance, which manifests as a monolithic gate with intricate designs primarily consisting of pure gold. Despite being invulnerable to breaching attempts, this gate automatically unfurls mechanically[5], allowing the wanderers to proceed into its sub-levels (as they have no other way out of the Void but to enter it).

In cases of Derelicts, main entrances are vary; some were left slightly ajar, while others show severe damage indicating forceful intrusions that lead to it.

Another method to enter this level exists but is difficult to navigate. It can be lead this level through Level 6, far from its entry point, this alternative entrance may be identified by soothing sounds of resonance or golden dusts localized in a single area, guiding wanderers towards it.

Exiting this level is virtually impossible due to its labyrinthine layout and its vast, seemingly infinite sets of sub-levels. However, there are some sub-levels with lone archways with two glowing apertures that stands on the golden circular platforms or intricate alcoves along sub-level edges or walls that serve as exit points. It should be noted that exiting through these exits may lead into random levels.

Colonies and Outposts[]

Currently, there are only two outposts established within ruined sub-levels, serving as footholds for research into this level and conducting search and rescue operations for lost wanderers.

However, active sub-levels are deemed uninhabitable due to their security systems.

Additional Information[]

Addendum P-01-1[]

Despite the level is correlated with the Travelers, the Keepers will considered them as threats especially they become more aggressive when they retrieve objects inside the active sub-levels. This will increase the hostility and the intensity of its defensive systems against the Travelers to the point that some of the wanderers that involved with them encountered new types of Keepers.

Interview Log HG 022-1[]

The following interview of a wanderer who have encountered the level.

Interviewer: Agent Oliver

Foreword: This interview was conducted after the wanderer exited the level, escorted by a Traveler several months ago. The identity of the subject is kept private. The agent visited one of the wanderer’s residences.

<Begin Log>

Agent Oliver: Mr. ██████?

██████: Yeah, yeah. Here to talk about how we got out from that "level," right?

[Subject offers him a beer]

██████: Want some?

Agent Oliver: Oh, thanks. And also about that Traveler.

██████: Traveler..? Oh, you mean those weird people in golden suits of armor? Yeah, what about them?

Agent Oliver: It says here that they helped you get out.

██████: Yeah. Honestly, this was my first time meeting one of them. I thought they were an odd bunch with weird, yet good, fashion sense, helping us out. But seeing one of them in action? They're clearly not human, but at least they're helpful. Just definitely don’t fuck around with them, that’s for sure.

Agent Oliver: Okay. So, let’s start from the beginning. How did you end up in that level?

██████: (Pauses) Just the usual stuff, y'know. Me and ████ were on a trip to Level 1, but I got no-clipped into that damn floor. I swear it wasn't there yesterday.[6]

Agent Oliver: And that’s how you both fell into the Void and ended up in that level?

██████: Yeah, he tried to pull me up from it, but my fat ass dragged my buddy along with me. It felt like forever falling into the Void, it didn't take long until we landed on a white marble floor. It's weird and terrifying, but luckily it didn’t kill us from the fall.

Agent Oliver: All the wanderers fall on that level. But go on.

██████: Then we saw a huge golden gate before us. ████ and I argued over whether we should go in or not, but we didn’t have much choice, so we just entered, hoping to find a way out. (Sigh) Anyway, we got in and it was dark and abandoned. It looked like we were in some sort of palace, it's neat but I noticed there were bits of high-tech stuff in that place rather than to show it off and despite being abandoned for God knows how long.

Agent Oliver: How long were you two stuck in there?

██████: Uh... about a week or so? I dunno. At least that place wasn't too dangerous or made us go insane. Sure, it was empty and kinda creepy at times, but it's safe. So we just kept walking and walking, we didn't to find a way out because of how huge that damned place was. And if we did reach the end, we ended up in another huge room. We could've died of hunger, but it had food in it.

Agent Oliver: Food?

██████: Yeah, we were running out of our rations until we stepped into another room with a long table full of food that could feed ten families.

Agent Oliver: And you ate it?

██████: At first, we were starving and desperate. Whether we ate it or not, I figured that place must’ve been there for billions of years, and those food hadn't been touched for God knows how long. So yeah, I decided to hog that table. I even had to pinch my nose in case if it's rotten.

Agent Oliver: Any effects you experienced?

██████: I dunno. We thought we were gonna have a bad case of food poisoning or worse—turning into entities. But instead, it made us feel more alive for some reason.

Agent Oliver: What do you mean by “alive”?

██████: Like y'know... stayed awake. Even the two of us weren’t yawning or even drowsy from exhaustion. I think we just kept moving on during that time.

Agent Oliver: Right. Did you ever encounter entities?

██████: Yeah, when we entered another room with lights on. It scared the fuck outta us when that room let out an echoing thump as all the lights turned off for just about a minute or two. Then, when the lights came back on, we were left with these weird glowing copies of us, and those weird little shapes scattering across the floor. The level kept flashing on and off until those shapes slowly rolled towards us.

Agent Oliver: That's called the Keepers. They're the level's main form of defense.

██████: Really? But those little shits attacked us like angry bees. It was easy to take them out if it weren’t for their weird way of flying, zipping across the room. There weren't that many of them, but goddamn, they just kept coming until eventually one of those bigger and angrier ones showed up.

Agent Oliver: Those things aren't so easy to destroy.

██████: I know, but I'm no good shooter. ████ did all the shooting, and let's just say he had a lot of history back in the Frontrooms before we ended up here in this hellhole. Anyway... other entities showed up.

Agent Oliver: Who were they?

██████: They were kinda mushroomy... but also mechanical, especially with crab or spider-like legs. Not that I know of.

Agent Oliver: It's possible that these might be new entities.

██████: Yeah, but... I dunno. They looked armed to the teeth, and they weren't friendly when they spotted us. I think they're the ones who started the fight, given the fact that most of them were swarming those guys instead of us.

Agent Oliver: Noted. And they were attacking you, I presume.

██████: Yeah. They started shootin' at us with these globs of corrosive acid, or sometimes they shot needles that could easily melt chunks of meat. I still remember hearing them saying stuff I couldn't understand. I swear I heard them shouting and laughing while talkin' shit at us because we kept stumblin' around as running away from 'em.

Agent Oliver: Go on.

██████: But shit got worse while gettin' chased by those angry shapes and those crab-fungus guys. It became a battlefield between the two. We kept runnin', and I thought my heart was gonna give out at some point...

(Subject pauses briefly)

██████: Has anything like that ever happened before? I mean, in that level?

Agent Oliver: No, I’ve never heard of this kind of incident before. Typically, those Keepers will just kill any intruders in that sub-level and be done with it. But I can see why you’re so shaken up after that ordeal.

██████: Yeah, thank God for that if it wasn’t for her.

Agent Oliver: Oh, that Traveler... You mentioned you got wounded, and what happened to Mr. ████, right?

██████: Yeah, the needle hit me. It hurt like hell, but my backpack saved me. I had enough time to take it out before it melted my whole back. Wanna see?

Agent Oliver: N-no, please. But what happened to your friend?

██████: Him? (Sigh) We got split up when we were on the bridge until that biggest one showed up and blew it up, causing us to go our separate ways.

Agent Oliver: Never heard of this... What happened to him? Is he...?

██████: He's fine, but he’s been... different ever since. He stayed in his apartment in Level ██, though I dunno if you’ve tried to talk to him, but it’s best not to interview him. Just give him some time. At the end of the day, I'm really grateful that she kept her promise to look after him.

Agent Oliver: And about that entity...

██████: When I was alone, I got cornered by those flying shapes, and just as they were about to vaporize me, she came in... At first, I thought she was one of those entities that lived in that level and had to deal with us personally, but she cut 'em up like a hot knife through butter. It doesn’t make any sense why she did that, but I'm guessing she wasn’t welcomed there either.

Agent Oliver: What did she do for you?

██████: She was pissed, though—she asked how I got there and said it wasn’t a place for looting and all that. And why were they attacking her, by the way?

Agent Oliver: I don't know either, from what I've heard, the security systems in that level didn’t recognize them. But what happened next?

██████: That place turned to shit. It was like those big spiky things were drilling through the ceilings, and I think those were the 'pirate ships' she mentioned.

Agent Oliver: "Pirate ships?"

██████: Y'know, those crab-fungus guys? Apparently, she and her folks knew them and hated 'em a lot too. But she focused on getting me out in one piece, which wasn’t easy because those guys had their eyes on her. Despite there being only two of us, she kicks ass. She was cutting them into pieces while zipping to walls like a fuckin' ninja. She even used her powers to poof out a sun and I'm not even exaggerating - a fuckin' sun, yet it didn't burn not even feeling warm despite how I'm close to it, well to the others though, they all burned into crisp. But there were too many of them, and eventually one of them managed to hit her squarely on front of her, but it didn’t stop her.

(Subject pauses)

██████: She got hurt pretty badly by those entities... I tried to help her, you know? When she got knocked down, I had to drag her for cover, begging her to stand up. I tried shooting at 'em, but how could a 9mm peashooter do any good against those, essentially, armored walking tanks?

Agent Oliver: And she got back up?

██████: Yeah but she looked pretty bad, but if she showed her face beneath her helmet, she’d smile. She said everything was alright as we were about to leave the level, but I knew she wouldn’t last. It looked like a giant circular deck of stairs that made of crystals and marble, and she said it was a ticket to get out. But...

Agent Oliver: Your friend...?

██████: I asked her about him while we're on the run, telling her that ████ and I got separated. She told me she'd find him... and after that, she pushed me and that’s how I got out. I had to get through several levels safely after that. I don’t know what happened back there, it’s been weeks since then, and... another week passed. Some of my folks said rescuers brought ████ back to safety... I guess she really kept her promise that day. But what happened to him was the worst—he became... vacant.

Agent Oliver: Do you know where he lives?

██████: He locked himself in his home and remains there. But if you guys are planning to talk to him, please just... be careful with him and help him out.

Agent Oliver: Will do. Alright, that'll be all. Thank you.

██████: You too.

After visiting ██████'s residence, the agents proceeded to ████'s residence. Instead of interviewing him, they spoke to his neighbors and others involved in rescuing him. Wanderers reported that he had been saved by a female Traveler, the entity in question is being wounded, just as ██████ had described.

Some of the rescuers stated that he had been no-clipped into unknown level, when they told what it is he simply described it "Home" but further explaining of it causes him to break from his stupor and panic. It is presumed that the Traveler went there and rescued the wanderer then escorting him to a nearby outpost. The fate of the entity who rescued the wanderer remained unknown.

Entity Encounter Report 001-1-3[]

Aside from entities such as the Travelers and Marauders, there are other unidentified entities that seems to be interest in traversing this level. These entities are often been seen pillaging objects, particularly in active sub-levels, or seeking refuge within some of the Derelicts. However, some of these are dangerous and extremely hostile upon contact, especially towards the Travelers and the Marauders, resulting in conflicts and casualties.

Addendum P-02-1[]

There have been a few reports of wanderers hearing the sounds of knocking on a wooden door, regardless of the distance between them and the source. According to those who have heard it, the sound knocks three times between long pauses but in random intervals and frequencies, and some of them say that the sound is getting closer, but later some of those wanderers report that it has vanished with no traces.

However, the veracity of these claims has yet to be confirmed due to the rarity of these incidents, wanderers, and disappearances, but it is enough to be considered pending in the database, though it is unclear whether it is a phenomenon, an entity, or something else entirely. More research on this anomaly is required.

Footnotes[]
  1. Also known as the "Treasure Level."
  2. These sub-levels are assumed to be the bottom part of the whole level.
  3. It typically approaches the intruders' location during these occurrences.
  4. Possibly nanotechnology.
  5. Whenever it opens or closes, the main entrance gate and other gates within the level emit a soothing harmonic sound.
  6. Upon investigation, the location from which the subject and his associate had no-clipped and fallen to the level is no longer there.
