What exists, anyway? You're looking for information on "The Torment" I presume. Perhaps the memo never reached you.

You want meaning.

Unfortunately, this place cannot provide that. Neither can this database, your consciousness, nor your belief system. The Backrooms is infinite — your mind can only comprehend so much before it self-destructs. So there you remain — a speck of sand on the beach, tormented by the crashing waves. Your time in the Backrooms will be full of endless suffering, no matter how you attempt to control your fate. The more you learn more about the Backrooms, the more your fragile mind falls apart. Perhaps your strong-willed mind was initially able to withstand the crashing waves of truth.

Unfortunately, the powerful waves will win in the end. It's only a matter of time before the waves finally wash you away and send you here, a metaphysical representation of Purgatory.

The Torment is an anomaly inside the Backrooms — while rumored to exist, it cannot be entered through conventional means… if at all.

Description

The Backrooms are a prison, but what lies beyond this plane of reality is unknown, infinite, and unpredictable. One could feasibly escape the Backrooms, but the journey beyond, as of yet, is undocumented and undefined. Humans fear the unknown, and thus create theories in a futile attempt to explain it. Perhaps ignorance truly is bliss… because once the truth is known, it cannot be forgotten.

This is the basis of The Torment, a new world that, according to five witnesses, appeared randomly in Level 0 without explanation for several hours before vanishing. Witnesses described the area as monotone in color, with a strong feeling of dread enveloping anyone daring to approach it. The anomaly contained what appeared to be multiple graves arranged in perfect circles, all surrounding a deteriorated statue of an unknown hooded man in the center. The grayness of the place bled into Level 0's yellow wallpaper, which slowly lost its saturated tone as the anomaly spread. Any objects, entities, or humans who came in contact with any surface affected by the monotone color quickly turned a gray color before dissolving into ash.

Previously, it was thought that the wanderers who suffered this fate tasted death. This was only partially correct — the M.E.G., through extensive research and attempts to contact the victims of The Torment, have concluded that although the physical body no longer exists, the soul still wanders freely. Their reasoning for this conclusion is confidential but will be listed in an addendum for anyone with proper credentials to view.

According to the M.E.G.'s conclusion, the souls, unfortunately, have nowhere to go. They're stuck wandering The Torment and its endless arrays of graves, forced to relive their worst memories. Each gravestone's inscription contains a name, a short sentence, and two dates, presumed to be the date of birth and the date of death. The sentence appears to describe the named person's cause of death — however, no entities, objects, or levels are mentioned by name or number classification. Any attempted mention of either will be blanked out. For example, one of the gravestones allegedly reads:

Transformed into _______ after a sustained period without food.[2]
