Pain Eaters are hostile entities who are able to live solely on Level Pain.

Biology

Pain Eaters are amphibian-like creatures who span 2'6" feet in length. The females have 4 6-inch-long claws meant for scratching for food and burrowing their eggs. Pain Eaters eat the contents of a very specific "bleeding rock." Pain Eaters live on the floor of the sea in Level Pain, having gills that can breathe liquid pain. Pain Eaters have very good eyesight that adapts to both under the sea and on land. Their hearing is very poor, meaning that loud sounds do not attract their attention.

Behavior

Pain Eaters stay in colonies of 35-50. When Pain Eaters are not eating or sleeping, female pain eaters are guarding their eggs while male pain eaters are seeking out other colonies' egg nests to mate. Pain Eaters sleep continuously for 12 hours a day. They eat just after waking up and just before sleeping. A colony of Pain Eaters usually go to eat at once.

When Pain Eaters are ready to eat, they travel to the surface. Their food is a blood-like substance inside of a very specific type of rock that’s on Level Pain. If the rocks aren’t already broken, the Pain Eaters will use their claws to scratch the rock until they ‘bleed.’ The ‘blood’ of the now broken rock are eaten by the children, then the females, then the males. If a rock gets dried out, they simply go to a different rock. After feasting, the colony of pain eaters go back to the sea.

Their normal eating patterns change when they see any organic animal including humans. Instead of feasting on the rocks, they’ll go up to the animal and scratch them instead. If a wanderer gets fed on by the Pain Eaters, they’ll have giant bleeding cuts on their body. The entities' claws most likely have liquid pain residue on them from the ocean, meaning liquid pain will get into the bloodstream and cause consumption effects.

Studies on Pain Eaters

The biologists at Level 1033 were interested by the Pain Eaters and wanted to provide more information to wanderers. The biologists put down a red box underground that is the size of an Olympic Swimming Pool. They also collected some rocks from Level Pain.
