Lies can be used to manipulate people into having a different point of view or to spread incorrect information. In the Backrooms, lies are common. One must have the skills to sort factual information from lies meant to deceive for survival.
Different Types of Lies
There are three different types of lies. Each type of lie has a different source and different ways to identify.
Propaganda
On the Merriam Webster Dictionary, there are three definitions for propaganda.
- The first definition has nothing to do with the type of propaganda we are discussing today.
- The second definition is “the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person.”
- The last definition is “ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one's cause or to damage an opposing cause.”
Our definition combining both of these is deliberately spreading ideas, facts, or rumor to help or damage an institution, cause, or person.
Propaganda v.s. Persuasion
The definition of propaganda sounds similar to the definition of persuasion, but they have different applications. Propaganda only benefits the propagandist while persuasion benefits both parties.
