Lies can be used to manipulate people into having a different point of view or to spread incorrect information. In the Backrooms, lies are common. One must have the skills to sort factual information from lies meant to deceive for survival.

Different Types of Lies

There are three different types of lies. Each type of lie has a different source and different ways to identify.

Propaganda

The definition of propaganda is

“information, ideas, opinions, or images, often only giving one part of an argument, that are broadcast, published, or in some other way spread with the intention of influencing people's opinions.”

The above definition may have sounded familiar to you. That is because the definition of propaganda is similar to the definition of persuasion. The definition of persuasion is

“the action of persuading someone or of being persuaded.”

So, what is the definition of persuading or persuaded? The root word of both is persuade. The definition of persuade is

“to make someone do or believe something by giving them a good reason to do it or by talking to that person and making them believe it.”

Let us compare their definitions. Propaganda can be spread by word of mouth, so that means both definitions spread to influence opinion. Propaganda only shares one side of the argument while persuasion includes the other side to tell why it’s the inferior option. The other difference is that propaganda is not given to benefit the other person, while persuasion is.

To recap, propaganda is spreading information, ideas, opinions, or images, often only giving one part of an argument, that are broadcast, published, or in some other way spread with the intention of influencing people’s opinions only benefiting the propagandist.

Disinformation

The definition of disinformation is

“false information spread in order to deceive people.”

That may sound a bit like propaganda to you. What’s the difference?

Misinformation

The definition of misinformation is

“wrong information, or the fact that people are misinformed.”
