Knaff - "Into the Heavy Steel Depths"

Doorway We imagined these doors were not meant to be opened.

We would often encounter immense sealed doors, like vaults, at the ends of these caverns. Set on hinges bigger than my thighs and reaching around 20ft into the air, these doors could fit a bus through them. But time and again they would be sealed and impenetrable against the solid rock face and we would carry on. We would pass by many caverns and assume the heavy steel doors would be closed and bolted shut forever, until one particular cave; we felt an ominous cold draft of wind blowing out from its rocky and lonely depths.

When we investigated this shaft, the massive vault door was left ajar, laying bare a sliver of vision into the cavernous depths of this impenetrable compound. We felt a duty to enter. The wind whistled through our hair as we crossed through the heavy, foreboding entrance, past the massive vault bolts that looked built to withstand apocalypse, and that cold draft should have whispered a warning to us. It very well may have, but we were ignorant of its words, and pressed on into the cavern. It went on and on, and soon, we were entombed.

Deeper It went downwards forever.

We were at first met with a long, cold hallway. It slanted slightly downhill, making us feel like we were descending into the belly of a beast. Smooth concrete muffled our footprints but the rough stone walls of the corridor carried the sound of our breath and voices far, reverberating in fast tinny echoes deep underground.

Working pot-lights dangled from industrial wiring overhead, and we could almost feel the sound of a deep rumbling humming in our chests resonating through the entire structure. That steady ambience was comforting in a way —- it felt like there was a spark of life here juxtaposed against the unwelcoming cold hallway that we trespassed further and further into. The humming ran through us and the crackling lights above, and made us feel like we were becoming a part of the compound. There was only us and the cold hallway for a long time, until we came across a small platform cut into the rock wall and a metal door.

Given the choice between the door and to simply walk deeper underground, there really was only one decision to make. The echoes of our voices were consumed by the tunnel with no end in sight. We tried the latch handle and the cold metal responded to our curiosity, opening without a grudge.

It was our first look at the inner workings of just what this compound was.

chairs The offices seemed abandoned at a moments notice.
