Level 37.1 is a sublevel of Level 37.

The Rooms An image of Level 37.1.

Description

Level 37.1 is often seen as an extension of its main level, Level 37. It shares the magnitude of the pool complex, with haphazardly separated rooms and intricate architecture, more often than not presenting chaotic patterns throughout the level. While the design remains constant, every room contains a different detail or ostensible purpose, contrasting with others. While some sections barely have enough water to be referred to as a pool, some are shallow enough to be forgotten in it. Despite all those characteristics, The Deep End isn't as pleasant as one may think.

Navigating through the level is difficult, as lighting is very scarce, with sparse openings in the walls that emit a poor, indirect source of light — with an unknown source —, barely enough to see what is in one's sight; some areas do not contain light in the slightest, making it virtually impossible for a safe exploration. Some deeper rooms do not contain direct exits, forcing the ones that wander through it to explore other ones to find their way out. The exits in the rooms can vary; while some are small tunnels mostly underwater, where one has to crawl or swim through it, other ones are long hallways, similar to the ones found in simpler levels. The water has an intense, deep green-blue tone, intensified by the deep darkness and contrasting with the superficial structure of the level. Differently from its main counterpart, the tiling present all through the level varies; some zones present the classic square and white tiles, while others contain rectangular, blue-colored ones.

The lack of maintenance gives Level 37.1 an ominous aspect — filthy grouts, destroyed tiles and poorly built structures are some of the most common aspects, going against the perfection of the Poolrooms, its counterpart. The temperature of the water is constantly frigid, remaining slightly above freezing. Along with this, the air is notably dry and stale. The structure of the level is bound to change quickly and haphazardly, resulting in a twisted linear space. Navigation and geolocalization of the level is improbable due to those properties.

Colonies and Outposts

Due to the nature and magnitude of Level 37.1, the existence of colonies and outposts is considered infeasible.

Entities

Level 37.1, due to its magnitude, doesn't present many entities in its surroundings, with the two only confirmed ones being the Facelings and the Hydrolitis Plague, a deadly disease that lurks around untreated bodies of water.

The Hydrolitis Plague

The Hydrolitis Plague, as seen in other levels throughout the Backrooms, is a bacterium present in the water of Level 37.1. It is commonly found in stagnant bodies of water, but more specifically in abandoned and untreated pools. In the case of Level 37.1, it is aggravated as a consequence of the lack of chlorine, seen by the deep green color of the water. As direct airborne contamination seems unlikely due to the tight separation of each room in the level, the most likely case is by direct contact with contaminated water.

The infected ones in the level have an average survival rate lower than in other levels, aggravated by the extreme conditions around the pools. Apart from the intense temperatures, some rooms have disorganized pools, with rare cases being as deep as 40 meters.

Observations and Mysteries
After countless miles of wandering with no goals in mind, being lost from my senses, just me and my destructive conscience, I've come to my senses about the space I'm inserted in. What can't be seen in the digital forms, the unheard and the hidden is very much tangible when seen in person. The unnatural properties presented in The Deep End, hardly ever seen in such spaces, seems to censor itself. This is an element that can't be captured by any device. It's a vision you have to understand from perspective. The dark goes much beyond from what it really is. Contrasting with its 'aesthetic companion', the areas that aren't shown in Level 37.1 represent the imperfection in its truest form.

A Dead End Another image of Level 37.1.

As Level 37 was discovered, it was described as having a pristine nature, all minimally designed to give a calming sensation to those that wander by. Suddenly, the constant fear of being chased in an infinite space throughout a dimension you've never seen before stops. You are in a dream. The eeriness is still there, sure, but everything is so homogenous that the reoccurring restlessness takes a break; the same thing can't be said for this edifice. Demolished walls, broken tiles, missing sections with no feasible explanation and inhumane conditions are some of its main traits.

When one goes through the dark spaces in the Poolrooms, they can't expect what will be found next. The flawless atmosphere starts to fade. The uniformity of white tiles all around, resembling the mono-yellow madness from the genesis, can't be seen anymore. The ugly phase starts. Level 37.1 is supposed to be the contrast between sublimity and mediocrity. When a flawless vase breaks, it will impact more than when it was intact. A dismantled zone will have more influence than an undamaged one. That is The Deep End.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

  • Going through the darker, colder areas of Level 37 may lead one to here.
  • The pool in Level 58 has the possibility of no-clipping directly to Level 37.1.

Exits

  • Occasional parts where the water waves start to become stronger may lead to Recollections.
  • Certain parts of the level where the sources of light are stronger can redirect back to the original entrance level.
