Level 961 is the 962nd level of the Backrooms. It is composed of 3 main parts: Fogvale, The Repository of Light, and The Lake of Discovery. Each component is explained in depth in each tab labeled with those titles.
An image of Level 961, otherwise known as Fogvale. The lake of Almond Water is not visible.
Description
Level 961 is primarily made up of an enormous valley, known as Fogvale, or The Valley of Trial. Fogvale has been known to create feelings of fear, and the sense of being lost. The mountains are surrounded by a rickety wooden fence, situated at the peaks of each hill and mount. Climbing over the fence is almost impossible, due to there being an invisible barrier that appears to be made out of stone. The barrier repairs any damage to itself at midnight exactly. Beyond the fence, there is nothing but fog, and the ground. It is unknown how far the fog goes. The level is around 1,000 square miles, not counting the outside of the fence.
The valley has a constant downward slope, where it is so steep, one can barely walk down or up. Adding on to the difficulty, there are no trails. There are wells of Almond Water scattered throughout the level. The temperature is usually around 65° Fahrenheit, although it has reached 70° at its highest, and 50° at its lowest. There are almost no trees, although one may come across a lone hollow tree on occasion. The ground is always moist, as if it has just rained, although it has never been known to rain on this level. It always smells of Almond Water and wet dirt. There is a daylight cycle, consisting of 10 hours of day and 10 hours of night. During the day, the sky is covered by clouds, and at night, the sky clears up. There are no stars or moons.
An unusual attribute to this level is that noise does not echo here, as it would with a normal valley. Shouting will not reverberate throughout the hills and mountains. In fact, the valley seems to dampen sound. It is nearly impossible to hear a person shouting at you from more than 90 meters away.
There is an entrance to an underground repository in one of the greater surrounding hills. The repository is known as the Repository of Light. It is housed underneath the largest hill.
Description
The repository has 3 floors, with each floor having a purpose. The first contains the Guiding Shelves, which is the index for the contents of the repository. The Guiding Shelves are the smallest floor. The second floor contains the storage area for the valuables hidden within. Lastly, the third floor contains the knowledge, buried inside the books. The repository dampens the feelings of fear that the valley creates, which makes it an ideal spot to rest. The total area of the repository is around 3 square miles.
Floor 1: "The Guiding Shelves"
The Guiding Shelves consist of an acre of wooden shelves, which contain books that serve as the index for the entire repository. The floors are stone, and the walls are covered with bookshelves. The ceiling is painted green. At the entrance, there is a collection of colorful stones that can animate several automatons, which serve as guides. The automatons are stored inside a small closet, near the rocks. They have the power of speech, but they do not have true intelligence. They are essentially robots. Their only purpose is to serve visitors to the repository. They cannot leave the repository. They only have a small amount of knowledge specific to the repository and the level. The automatons can lead you to anywhere you would like to go in the repository.
Floor 2: "The Treasury"
This floor is specifically designed for the purpose of storing valuables. The walls are covered with stone shelves and glass cases, storing many valuables. The floors are tile, and the ceiling is painted gray. The collection of valuables that specifically belong to the repository may not be taken. One will be killed if they try. You are able to leave items of your own here, if you want them to be protected, as any items left here can only be take by the person who left them there. If the wanderer who left them there dies, the items in question will from then on be considered part of the repository's collection.
Floor 3: "The Archives"
This area was designated for the storing of books, and the knowledge they contain. This floor is organized like a maze, with desks and writing material scattered throughout. The books are meant to be read, and contain information not only about Level 961, but other levels as well. Books that belong to the repository cannot be removed from this floor. There are several journals by wanderers, cataloging information they have personally discovered. An excerpt from one of the more significant logs is recorded in the tab labeled "Journals".
Description
At the center of Fogvale, there is a lake of Almond Water, otherwise known as The Lake of Discovery. It is around 5 square miles. The lake has not been explored enough to discern how deep it is, but it is believed to be at least several miles deep. The Almond Water has no impurities. There is constant rippling in the liquid, although there appears to be no source for the rippling. Because of this, it has been theorized that at the bottom there may be an entrance to Level 37.There are no entities on this level. However, the Repository of Light contains lifelike constructs designed to work as library guides. More information can be found about these odd automatons in the tab labeled "The Repository of Light".
There are no colonies or outposts currently established on this level.
Excerpt 1 (written by an unknown wanderer)
"I have made it to another level. I was wandering The Hub when I came across a strange door. I pushed it open and walked through. There I was, outside. The atmosphere was unsettling, as if a blanket of fear had been laid over me. I shouted, and instead of echoing, as it would through a normal valley, the words seemed to fall flat. The ground was moist, and it was extremely foggy. How I afraid I was, just a few moments ago. I feel safer now that I am inside. I found a pen and paper, and a desk, where I am writing this passage. I will leave this here for any future wanderers, to know that they are not alone. They very well may not be, in fact. I feel as if I'm being watched, though I have not yet encountered any entities."
Entrances
There is 1 currently known method of entering Level 961.
- The only known entrance to this level is through The Hub. Go through a slightly transparent, dark gray door. The door will not have a handle, but it will open if you push it. The door appears randomly and with no prior notice.
Exits
There are 2 currently known methods of exiting Level 961.
- Noclipping into the ground gives you a 50% chance of entering Level 879, and a 50% chance of entering The Void.
- Occasionally, one will come across a lone hollow tree. Climbing into the hollow leads to Level 311.
Theoretical Entrances And Exits
There is 1 theoretical method of entering/exiting Level 961.
- It has been theorized that if you dive deep enough into The Lake of Discovery, you will exit into Level 37.
