Backrooms Wiki

Wakefield Research Facility, Headed by Gideon Johnson, is an underground research facility, twinned with the above ground Wakefield National Archives, owned also by Gideon Johnson. Founded in 1934, the facilities main purpose is to delve deeper into the rabbit-hole known as The Backrooms.

Wakefield National Research Facility- architecture and interior design

the architecture of the facility is quite spectacular. the entire site, stretching nearly a kilometre at its widest, is a flat oval shape, sectioned into 4 quadrants, with a 5th, smaller section in the centre. some refer to this design as a panopticon. the facility is constructed of, in order:

sector 1- the recreation sector

this sector is comprised of a gym and cafeteria, including a library- cross- education centre and housing facilities, accommodation for overnight employees, or, when worse comes to worst, refuge for 50,000 refugees. the recreation sector is not free to access by the general public unless a national lockdown procedure is put in place.

sector 2- the research sector

this sector is where office blocks and laboratories are found, where all of our employees work. This is where most of the offices are situated, as well as archives of historical records, and meeting rooms. as HIBIRC, Alexander Blaize-Cornell oversees everything going on in this sector, as well as the next sector, sector 3.

sector 3- the generation sector

sector 3 is a storage sector, holding approximately 50 bioreactors, and 2 polonium-210 fission reactors. Without these, this facility would cease to exist, including a 50km radius around it. only high- class personnel are classified to enter sector 3, for obvious reasons. previously, the foundation functioned primarily on those 50 bioreactors, but due to technological development, the fission reactors were implemented in 2004.

sector 4- the [REDACTED] sector

sector 5- The Function, version 07_theta

this is where the magic happens.

The Function, Alexanders quote unquote "magnum opus". this incredible piece of machinery allows us to enter the backrooms at whatever time. the way it does this is very simple, really. if your reading this, you've probably heard of quantum tunnelling, or the passage of atoms through an object due to the fact that they have enough energy to do so. this is precisely how The Function works. a 30 meter long, 3 meter high aluminium plate, 2 feet thick, stands just above the floor. electricity is passed into the plate, in a specific and confidential way. this electricity causes the panel to vibrate at a given frequency. as the power input rises, unfortunately so do radiation levels. luckily, a 5 meter thick concrete-lead mix surrounds The Function, preventing radiation poisoning, among... other things. when the frequency of the panel is ramped up to the same frequency of light, the panel shimmers out of existence. Radioactive levels drop to 0. All that's left to meet the eye is moist carpet, mono-yellow vintage wallpaper and the hum of fluorescent bulbs, peeking through a 30 by 3 meter window suspended in the air.
