Wall Worms

Entity Number: 24

Habitat: Majority

Description

Wall worms are long, thin bio-mechanical creatures which resemble some form of slug-like worm species, but also contain a robotic core which seems to be the source of this artificial life. These robotic engines differ from worm to worm and are usually in a rusty state of disrepair despite still being functional. In some cases, Wall Worms seem to be almost completely robotic, with just an organic skin stretched over them, but they all behave the same. The only augmentation in all Wall Worms is a small mechanical core located in place of a heart that allows the worm to travel between different levels seemingly based on instinct. Due to the nature of the slime they leave in their trail and their tendency to eat through almost anything, colonies and outposts' infrastructures can quickly become unstable if enough Wall Worms are left unchecked in the area.

Behavior

Wall Worms mostly inhabit levels made from soft materials such as rotting plasterboard or dirt which they spend their time tunneling through with ease and at speeds of up to 0.5 m/s. They have been known to inhabit sections of levels made from much harder materials, such as concrete or metal, but show no change in behavior, besides tunneling much slower. When removed from their surroundings they can bite but as soon as they find a surface again they will attempt to burrow into it.

Biology

The current accepted theory is that Wall Worms are artificially created somewhere, although if it is a level it has yet to be located. no Wall Worm in captivity or otherwise has been observed to die of natural causes but they can be killed easily. Wall Worms secrete a residue from both organic and artificial components that is both acidic, highly flammable and a compound of unknown elements. Wall Worms vary wildly in size, with possibly only the environment limiting how big they can get, worms in Level 0 and similar levels being on average 40cm long and 15cm at the widest point (the midsection) whereas levels with large uninterrupted sections of material such as the ground of levels resembling the outside of The Frontrooms can have Wall Worms as large as 7 meters with unconfirmed reports of worms "as big as a bloody mountain range"
