Description
The window is the most important facet of a building. Rooms would be dark and stuffy without the presence of windows. Windows let the natural light of the sun into rooms. Windows let in the fresh air. Rooms lacking windows need ventilation systems and artificial light sources to compensate for the lack of light and stale air. Windows also symbolizes opportunity, liberation, protection, secrets, and fear.
Windows in association to fear usually depicts some creepy individual staring out their window... watching... you. Other depictions include some horrified individual peeking outside their window to stare timidly into the darkness to spot some distant knife-wielding psycho staring back at them. Backrooms' windows are entities of deception and mimicry as they can take the form of any non-anomalous window. Backrooms' windows are sources of fear, anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as they can lead you to salvation or destruction.
Behaviors
Level 4 Windows
This image taken by operative Donny Yonwick shows a group of windows in the office space of Level 4 R.
Level 4 windows are the only known harmless species. They hide amongst the non-anomalous windows observing the explorers that traverse the empty offices. Most explorers do not even know they are there as these windows try to avoid drawing attention to themselves. What gives them away is that they can be here whispering to each other, especially at night. When explorers hear them whispering, they abruptly and awkwardly stop. When explorers approach these windows to investigate, they tremble. Some explorers have even reported that they heard the windows whimpering. It is not known why these windows are so timid. It is safe to look out these windows, however; there is no reality outside these windows to perceptive.
Level 188 Windows
This image taken by an unknown explorer shows a group of windows in Level 188. It cannot be confirmed which of these windows are entity or non-anomalous.
Level 188 windows are both dangerous and anomalous. Explorers who have entered the interior corridor of Level 188 will be greeted by a hallway of unmarked doors. Explorers can enter rooms, but this will trigger the anomalous effect induced but the windows. The effects windows cause is dependent on whether they are 'opened' or 'closed'. Some open windows display separate locations behind them. Entering rooms occupied by these windows will result in the door closing and locking. It is not known what happens to the individual trapped on the other side. There is no way of getting the door back open. Some windows are covered by a curtain and considered closed. Pulling the curtain away from a closed window results in the individual disappearing and the window simultaneously changing to display a new location behind it. These individuals who would interact with the window are presumed dead. Stranger still, some windows can reportedly replace non-anomalous ones. They also have been reports of shadow-like figures being seen in these windows. It is strongly advised to not interact with any windows in Level 188.
Windows Spotted Elsewhere

There have been reports of windows in Level -182, Level -404, and Level -369. There is evidence suggesting that there is a window in Level -40, but this has not been confirmed by the entity, Amygdala, stationed there. There is a possibility that the windows entity can be found on other levels.

These other windows are reportedly hostile, cunning, and patient ambush predators. They will attempt to predate anything that gets close to them. Their ideal prey is human explorers. These entities will also attempt to scare and intimidate their prey by making ominous or threatening remarks and tapping, thumping, scratching, and rattling their 'glass' and 'frame'. There have been reports that people have seen shadowy figures and disembodied faces and hands in the 'glass'. Getting too close to these entities will result in the victim being assaulted and immobilized by unknown means. Once immobilized, victims will be pulled into the window.
Window entities consist of different types of glass, and their glass type also influences their ambush style. Window entities consisting of annealed glass can explode their glass and launch glass shards at victims. This variant of window aims for the eyes, neck, and torso. The force of the explosion is enough to disorient their prey, launch glass violently through their victim's person, and temporarily impair vision and hearing. Entities consisting of tempered or laminated glass will crack to intimidate explorers. There have been reports of pieces of flesh wedged between and blood dripping from cracks. The window can reassemble and restore the normal appearance of its glass after shattering or cracking.
You can avoid a windows attack by staying away from any window you find on any level.
Biology
Appearance
Again, windows can take on the appearance of any known non-anomalous windows. Windows can either appear to be disembodied from a structure or 'built' into the walls of a structure. These entities typically consist of a frame. The frame is usually wooden but can be made of other non-anomalous materials. The entity's frame consists of either annealed, tempered or laminated glass. The annealed glass entities are the most dangerous for the reasons mentioned in the previous section.
Function
Like your typical non-anomalous window, you can look out them. It is not recommended. DO NOT attempt to open them. Below is a list of what you might see when looking in or out them:
- The true exterior or interior of a level.
- The false exterior or interior of a level.
- The next level over. Attempting to exit a level via a window can be risky. It is not recommended to use windows as exits unless there are no other available exits. There is usually a high risk of the entity killing you first before you cross over.
- A false location.
- Shadowy figures.
- Disembodied faces or hands.
- The Void. You will know when you see The Void in a window. You will see nothing but impenetrable darkness. You will experience this ominous and primordial sense of dread. Getting too close to any window in this state has a 90% chance of you no-clipping it and falling into The Void.
Discovery
The first group of windows was discovered in Level 4 on November 12, 19██, by M.E.G. patrol operative Nathan G. Isles one night on patrol. He reported hearing a group of windows talking amongst themselves in a language unknown. He commented that the voices sounded feminine. It cannot be confirmed if windows have gender and if and how they reproduce. Nevertheless, Nathan remarked that these entities immediately stopped talking upon him noticing their interaction. Attempts to get these entities to speak or interact with humans have not been successful. This variant of window has constantly responded timidly to the approach of humans. It has yet to be confirmed why.
The first incident with a dangerous window was in Level 188 on April 28, 19██. A group of 3 explorers entered the interior corridor of Level 188. One group member noticed and commented that they saw an open window and a sunny sugarcane field outside of the window. Out of curiosity, this individual went into the room, and the door closed and locked. The two remaining explorers reported they attempted to break down the door to no avail. They waited 2 hours before being forced to abandon their comrade as they spotted a 'Peripheral' down the hall they were lingering in. The other explorer is presumed lost or dead.
