Pure/Original Canon
This canon describes the very first viewpoint of the Backrooms, derived from the original post introducing the concept. New interpretations typically disagree with this idea, considering the massive expansion of the original idea. Those who accept this canon usually find the modern multifaceted interpretation of the Backrooms as straying too far from the original concept; rather than the thousands upon thousands of levels and entities of differing quality and complication, believers of the Pure Canon prefer an unsullied, less complex horror concept, focusing more on realistic aspects of terror in isolation and madness.
- This canon consists of the sole acceptance of Level 0 as the Backrooms, and nothing more. This goes along with the idea that there are no "levels", as Level 0 is the Backrooms. Viewpoints differ on the existence of entities in this canon, as they were not specifically mentioned in the original concept.
Traditional Canon
This canon follows the aforementioned simplified ideas of the Pure Canon, whilst accepting slightly more to the concept by introducing the idea of multiple "levels". Entities are usually included with this idea, as well. While not agreeing with the complex ideas of having too many levels (possibly oversaturating the concept and tamping down the horror), this canon has enough to give the feeling of a journey into the Backrooms, with many interpretations being given to each level; these interpretations range from metaphorical and figurative to those of more literal standpoints. A moderate portion of the Backrooms fanbase believes in this idea.
- This canon describes the acceptance of only 3 levels: Level 0, Level 1, and Level 2, with further levels remaining unconfirmed.
"The Main Nine" Canon
This refers to the mainly-believed Backrooms canon: The Main Nine. True to its name, this idea increases the number of confirmed levels up to 9. Most Backrooms fanbases subscribe to this canon (including this wiki!) because it offers a wider range of original levels that each have interesting ideas, but does not get out-of-hand with the number of levels. Each level, more or less, gets more dangerous and poses more of a threat as the number increases.
Unrestricted Canon
This canon, unlike the other beliefs, defines no bounds when it comes to "confirmed" levels; in the eyes of those who follow this belief, all levels are canonical. This is more common in newer followers of the Backrooms that do not mind having a free canon, including a portion of this wiki. While the quality of each level differs, considering them all as real can lead to a more extensive and interesting Backrooms lore.
- This canon considers every level as canonical.
